La Leun Waashisho:

Indigenous Moon Stories in AR

Next week artists Jason Baerg, Quinn Hopkins, Casey Koyczan, and Feather Miigwan are in Vienna to showcase their augmented reality pieces at our exhibition La Leun Wasshisho, presented with our partner PIX Film! Fusing Indigenous narratives that revolve around the moon with the ingenuity of AR, this is set to be a boundless multi-dimensional storytelling experience. And in follow up to the AR exhibition, our collaborator Setzkasten is hosting a night of performance art, where a series of artists will respond to the moon stories through sound and film.

If you happen to be in Vienna, you can experience the exhibition and event on:

Tuesday, November 26, 7pm at Museum Quartiers – Raum D

and Thursday, November 28 at 7pm at Setzkasten

Casey Koyczan, still from AR artwork “adzęzah ; moon”, 2024.

Casey Koyczan is a Dene interdisciplinary artist from Yellowknife, NT, who uses various mediums to communicate how culture and technology can grow together in order for us to develop a better understanding of who we are, where we come from, and where we are going. He creates with whatever tools necessary to bring an idea to fruition, and works mostly in sculpture, installation, 3D / VR / AR / 360, video, and audio works such as music, soundscapes and film scores.

Koyczan’s “adzęzah ; moon” communicates the relationship between the Dene drum and the moon; where the moon is influenced by the sound of the drum, and the drum emulates the textured surface of the moon. This work reflects the “Dene Laws” which are guiding principles for life.
